How to Read a Certificate of Analysis
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the analytical record for one specific production lot. It documents which tests were run, what instrumentation was used, and what the laboratory measured. Reading it takes only a minute once you know what each section represents.
HPLC purity
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography separates the compounds in a sample and measures how much of the total peak area belongs to the target peptide. The reported percentage (for example 99.37%) is the share attributable to the intended sequence; the remaining area represents related peptides, truncated fragments, or process residues.
Mass spectrometry (identity)
Purity alone does not confirm identity. Mass spectrometry measures the molecular mass of the material and compares it to the theoretical mass of the sequence. When the observed and expected masses agree within instrument tolerance, the sample is confirmed as the peptide named on the report.
Lot number
Each COA is tied to a single lot. The lot number is the link between the report and the vial in your hands, and it is what allows a result to be traced back to a specific synthesis and fill run.
Test date and quantity
The test date establishes when the analysis was performed relative to production. Many reports also include measured peptide content per vial, which is the mass actually present rather than the label claim.
Verification key
Janoshik reports carry a unique key that can be entered on the laboratory's own website. Verifying the key confirms the document you are reading matches the record held by the testing laboratory and has not been altered.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 99% purity on a COA actually mean?
It means that in the HPLC analysis, approximately 99% of the measured peak area corresponded to the target peptide. The balance consists of related substances such as truncated sequences or residual process materials. Purity is a measure of composition, not of identity or of any biological property.
Why do some reports show N/A for purity?
Blends containing more than one peptide are reported by quantity of each component rather than as a single purity figure, because there is no one target peak to measure against the total. For those lots the report documents identity and content per component instead.
Is the COA specific to the vial I received?
COAs are lot-specific. The report published here corresponds to the lot in current inventory for that item. If you need the report matched to a lot number on a vial you already have, contact us with the lot number and we will send the corresponding document.
Who performs the testing?
Testing is performed by independent third-party laboratories, primarily Janoshik Analytical, which specializes in peptide analysis. We do not self-report purity results.
How do I verify a report is authentic?
